On June 21 from 5-7 PM, Paracademia presented the sixth annual Make Music Harlem! New directions in arts presentations have spawned from Corona, including everything from Zoom, YouTube, Facebook, and other online and social media performances, to musicians playing their instruments and singing on the city stoops and sidewalks for their neighbors, and everything in between. Amidst all this, an interesting new culture has emerged - The Fire Escape Culture. As the lockdown kept us locked in, this small patch of outdoor space we typically have in our New York apartments and offices became our oasis, used not to escape from fire, but from the confines of the indoors. A place where we get our sun, where we start to garden, and even cook; but the most striking and vibrant fire escape revival moments are each day at 7PM when we cheer on our essential workers. Our fire escapes became our mini stages and our little performances spaces where we freely interact with one another for five minutes every day. So, this year, Make Music Harlem will be performed on the fire escapes of our offices on 119th St. in Harlem, directly overlooking our street stage for the occasion for the last five years. Five artists will took 'stage', one at time, starting at 5PM, and finishing together at 7PM with a collective improv and cheer.
